The Super Mario Bros. Sequel Gets Green Light With Official Release Date

The anticipation for the sequel to the blockbuster hit The Super Mario Bros. Movie has finally been put to rest as Universal and Illumination confirm their collaboration on The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, complete with a set release date. This comes after the monumental success of the 2023 film, which turned the tide for the franchise with a staggering $1.36 billion global box office haul, positioning it as the year’s second-highest-grossing film. Despite the buzz surrounding a potential sequel and uncertainties voiced by Jack Black, the voice of Bowser, a formal announcement lacked until now.
Nintendo celebrated Mario Day by sharing the news of their continued partnership with Universal and Illumination for the forthcoming movie. Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo and Chris Meledandri, the CEO/founder of Illumination, revealed plans to broaden the scope of Mario’s universe with a slated release of April 3, 2026, for both the U.S. and selected international markets. The project sees the return of directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and writer Matthew Fogel, signaling the start of production soon.
Miyamoto hinted at a story that’s not only captivating and enjoyable but also aims at expanding Mario’s realm even further. While the sequel’s direct reference as The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 was notably absent, the intention to bring back beloved characters and introduce new realms within the Nintendo universe is clear. The first film’s narrative laid the groundwork for additional characters such as Donkey Kong and Yoshi, promising a rich canvas for the sequel.
Although the exact narrative path of the sequel remains under wraps, the possibility of featuring a diverse array of antagonists from the Mario series suggests a fresh and engaging direction. With the original cast eager to reprise their roles, fans can look forward to seeing Chris Pratt, Jack Black, and Anya Taylor-Joy among others, possibly in new dynamics.
Nintendo’s venture into a live-action Legend of Zelda movie raises curiosity about potential crossover elements or thematic links within The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, enhancing the intrigue for both the sequel and the expansion of Nintendo’s cinematic universe.
